Yes, all hiking trails in Gastein are clearly marked with yellow signposts and red-white-red trail markings. Always stay on the marked trails and turn back if you can no longer see the markings. Please keep in mind that the indicated walking times are only approximate and can vary depending on factors such as age, fitness level, weather conditions and how you feel on that day.
Always carry enough water and a small snack – especially in spring and autumn when not all mountain huts are open. During peak season, it’s best to bring some cash, as card payments aren’t accepted everywhere. Be prepared for changing weather by packing proper sun and rain protection. A detailed hiking map and hiking poles (particularly useful for descents) are also recommended.
Sturdy hiking boots with good tread are essential. Ankle-high boots are especially helpful for preventing twisted ankles. Please note that on guided hikes, the guide may exclude participants who are not wearing appropriate footwear.
The Gastein valley has an excellent public transport network. Many trail starting points can be reached easily and sustainably by bus or cable car. With the Guest Mobility Ticket, available at your accommodation, you can use public transport free of charge.
Please treat the sensitive mountain environment with care. Stay on the marked trails, keep noise to a minimum, and do not litter. This helps preserve the Gastein valley’s natural beauty so that future generations can enjoy it too.
Always keep a safe distance from cows, calves and other grazing animals – and never try to pet or feed them. Be especially cautious around mother cows with their calves, as they can be very protective of their young. Walk by slowly and calmly, and avoid making any sudden movements. Carrying a walking stick can also help command respect. Dogs must always be kept on a lead, as cattle and horses can perceive them as a threat.
