My Gastein experience
Along cleared winter hiking trails, you can wander through snow-covered villages or ascend to sun-drenched high-altitude trails where the peaks of the High Tauern feel almost within reach. With snowshoes strapped to your feet, you can even explore the most peaceful and hidden corners of the valley.
As a romantic walk for two, a guided adventure or a family excursion: Every route offers moments of serenity and a fresh perspective on the alpine winter landscape. And after a day in the snow, Gastein’s warm thermal spas await – perfect for warming up and recharging in comfort.
The Gastein valley boasts 19 beautifully maintained winter hiking and snowshoeing trails, making the region’s snowy landscapes accessible and enjoyable for all ages. The trails are well-cleared, marked and range from gentle promenade walks in the valley to sunlit high-altitude trails on Schlossalm or Stubnerkogel.
Families especially value this diversity: Short walking times, safe routes and plenty of spots for a break turn every outing into a relaxing winter adventure.
Even better: With special pedestrian and winter hiking tickets for the mountain cableways pedestrian and winter hiking tickets for the mountain cableways, you can effortlessly reach higher elevations and take in sweeping scenic views without the long climb.
If you want to experience the winter landscape away from the groomed slopes, you can also opt for a snowshoe hike. Well-marked routes lead over gentle hills and through steeper terrain. Whether you prefer a leisurely loop or a challenging tour: Snowshoeing allows you to experience the winter landscape in a particularly authentic way.
Beginners benefit from special offers, including rental equipment available at local sports shops. Guided snowshoe tours with experienced hiking guides are one of the best ways to familiarise yourself with the ins and outs of the sport. The guides know the most beautiful routes and provide helpful tips on safety and technique.
Speaking of safety: If you venture out into the backcountry, be sure to check the avalanche report and weather forecast regularly!
Step by step through the glittering winter landscape: Hiking in the snowy Gastein valley is a truly special experience. The following tips will ensure you’re well prepared for your winter adventure:
Cold temperatures, deep snow and layered clothing make winter hiking more demanding than hiking in summer.
Days are shorter in winter. Start your hike at least 1.5 hours after sunrise and plan to return 1.5 hours before sunset.
Always stay on the marked trails! Venturing off-path can be dangerous due to disorientation, avalanche risk or the danger of falling. It also helps protect wildlife that rests during the winter months.
Bring a thermos with hot tea to stay warm and hydrated throughout your hike.
The Gastein winter hiking pin adds an extra touch of fun and motivation to your hikes through Salzburg’s snowy landscapes. At designated checkpoints along selected winter hiking trails, you can “stamp” your digital or physical card and collect points as you go. The more routes you complete, the closer you get to earning the bronze, silver or gold pin. It’s a delightful way to turn every winter or snowshoe hike into a rewarding alpine adventure.
The Gastein valley offers a wealth of winter activities beyond hiking. You can discover the many facets of the High Tauern mountains while skiing, cross-country skiing, sledging or ice skating. Gastein is also famous for its lively winter events – from the FIS Snowboard World Cup and Gastein Sounds to the Gastein Classics, adding excitement and variety to your holiday.
After active days in the snow, you’ll unwind in pure comfort at Gastein's thermal spas. At Alpentherme and Felsentherme, you can relax in soothing thermal waters while watching snowflakes fall outside – the perfect way to end your winter day.
