My Gastein experience
More than 40 kilometres of meticulously groomed cross-country ski trails wind through serene valleys, follow the Gasteiner Ache river, or climb to scenic alpine heights. Whether you’re looking for gentle movement or a rewarding workout: Cross-country skiing in Gastein lets you experience winter at your own pace – surrounded by nature’s quiet beauty.
From the gentle Kurparkloipe in Bad Hofgastein to the sun-drenched Mühlbachloipe in Dorfgastein and the demanding Bernhard Gruber Olympialoipe in Sportgastein – each trail offers its own unique charm. Whether you prefer the graceful rhythm of the classic diagonal stride or the power and speed of the skating technique: Gastein’s trails are expertly groomed for both styles.
Plan your cross-country ski day with ease: The up-to-date trail report gives you a clear overview of which trails in Gastein are currently open and freshly groomed – so you know exactly where to glide next.
The Gastein cross-country skiing region has plenty to offer cross-country skiers of all levels and preferences. With its various cross-country ski trails at different altitudes, there are a wide variety of routes to choose from. The high-altitude trail in Sportgastein, which stretches an impressive 1,600 meters above sea level, is particularly attractive.
The fantastic network of trails in Gastein comprises a total of around 40 kilometers of groomed trails, which are suitable for both classic cross-country skiing and skating.
For all dog lovers, the region also offers some of the few dog trails where you can go cross-country skiing with your four-legged friend.
Whether you’re just starting out or aiming to refine your technique: Gastein’s cross-country ski schools offer tailored instruction for every level. You can choose from group lessons or personalised one-on-one coaching. Many schools also provide special services like video analysis and fitness sessions to help you prepare off the trail. The perfect way to begin – or advance – your Nordic skiing journey with confidence.
Even after sunset, the cross-country trails in Gastein remain a magical place. Under a starry sky and gentle floodlights, skiers glide silently through the snowy landscape. Whether on Kurparkloipe in Bad Hofgastein, Böcksteiner Nachtloipe in Bad Gastein, or the illuminated trail at Sportplatz Unterberg in Dorfgastein: Evening skiing is both a workout and a wonderful escape – with only the sound of the skis on snow and the surrounding peaks shimmering under starlight.
Focus and stamina come together in a unique winter experience: Laser biathlon on the Kurparkloipe trail in Bad Hofgastein. Test your aiming skills with modern laser rifles – no ammunition needed. Under professional guidance, this fun and safe activity is perfect for families, friends or groups. Equipment and laser rifles are available to rent directly from the Bad Hofgastein Cross-Country Ski School.
Want to witness top international athletes in action? Each December, the Gastein Classics turn the valley into a hotspot for elite Nordic skiing. As the opening event of the prestigious Ski Classics race series, this weekend draws both professionals and ambitious amateurs to the trails of Gastein – all set against a breathtaking alpine backdrop.
After a rewarding day on the cross-country trails, you can unwind in the soothing thermal waters of Gastein's spas. Or switch things up with other unforgettable winter adventures: Glide through silent forests during a husky sled ride, go sledging with friends or enjoy a day of skiing with the whole family. This is winter in Gastein – active, relaxed and wonderfully diverse.
