You’ll learn the basics of dog mushing – from start and stop commands to steering techniques and proper handling of the animals. Then it’s your turn to get on the sled! Under expert guidance, you’ll harness the dogs and glide across snow-covered trails pulled by two to six huskies

 

Fascinating insights into the world of sled dogs

The accompanying workshop offers a closer look at life with sled dogs. Led by Manuela and Arnold from Husky Tours, you’ll find out how these incredible animals are trained, cared for, and how teamwork within the pack works. You’ll even have the chance to help care for the huskies yourself – an authentic and truly memorable experience for anyone wanting to connect with these loyal companions. 

Husky snowshoe hikes & (full) moon treks

If you prefer to stay on foot, a husky snowshoe hike or (full) moon trek is the perfect way to explore the snowy landscape. With a husky on the leash, you’ll walk through the quiet winter scenery, past snow-dusted trees and rocky slopes, with the towering peaks of the High Tauern range always in view. These tours are especially enchanting by moonlight, when the valley glows under a soft, silvery sky.

Little mushers, big smiles: husky adventure for kids

On the husky adventure, children can dive into the world of sled dogs in a fun and interactive way and even earn their very own little “musher’s certificate.” They’ll find out how to care for the dogs, learn more about the importance of teamwork, and understand why trust between humans and animals is key. A day full of movement, excitement and discovery, all set against the stunning mountain scenery of Sportgastein. 

 

Sporting highlight: International Sled Dog Race

Every year at the end of February, Sportgastein becomes the epicentre of sled dog sports. Around 600 dogs and 120 competitors from 11 nations gather for the International Sled Dog Race, competing in various skijoring and pulka classes. Along the course, spectators can witness thrilling races and experience the impressive strength and spirit of these remarkable animals up close.
