My Gastein experience
The Gastein valley is a paradise for nature lovers – but it’s equally a haven for culture enthusiasts and anyone seeking inspiration. Between rugged rocks and gentle meadows unfolds an impressive diversity of cultural expression, from living traditions to contemporary art.
Even during imperial times, Gastein attracted artists and intellectuals who found both relaxation and creative freedom in the valley’s picturesque setting. That same special energy still defines Gastein today – whether it’s on the village squares and mountain pastures or at the local artist’s workshops, concert halls and museums.
From gentle tunes at the local park to vibrant jazz in the snow, Gastein resonates with music throughout the year. The local concert scene spans from classical performances to modern festivals.
In summer, Berg:Klassik brings grand symphonies to an alpine backdrop, while in winter Snow Jazz Gastein delights audiences with international acts. The region’s traditional brass bands also provide authentic sounds and festive atmosphere at open-air concerts and local celebrations.
The museums of Gastein offer fascinating insights into history, art and craftsmanship – perfect for explorers of all ages. At Gastein Museum, visitors can immerse themselves in the Belle Époque era, while Montanmuseum Altböckstein brings the centuries-old gold mining tradition to life. Hofmuseum Hinterschneeberg provides an impressive glimpse into what rural life once looked like in the valley.
Religious, traditional or simply joyful: The region’s festivals bring guests and locals together. In summer, Dorf:Fest fills the streets with music and cheerful gatherings. During autumn, Bauernherbst (Farmers’ Autumn) is all about old harvest traditions, alpine cattle drives and regional cuisine. And in winter, traditional Christmas markets enchant visitors with music, local crafts and a festive glow.
Bad Gastein has been a place of inspiration for over a century. Even the artists of the Belle Époque found their muse in its dramatic landscape and elegant architecture. This creative tradition lives on today – in events such as sommer.frische.kunst. and Art on Snow, as well as in the visionary architecture of Gerhard Garstenauer.
