My Gastein experience
Its majestic alpine scenery, magnificent Belle Époque architecture and distinctive light made it a place of longing for creatives. Between waterfalls and mountain panoramas, artworks emerged that were shaped by the valley’s energy – and this spirit of inspiration continues to this day.
In the golden age of the 19th century, painters, writers and musicians gathered in the Gastein valley to find inspiration in nature. Many stayed for weeks or even months to capture the spirit of the Alps. To this day, the valley’s historic villas and grand hotels tell of this era, when Gastein became a cultural centre of the High Tauern region.
This artistic vein remains part of Gastein’s DNA: The valley is no museum, but a living place of creativity where past and present come together in fascinating harmony.
A stroll through Bad Gastein reveals architecture as a true art form. One of its defining figures was architect Gerhard Garstenauer, whose visionary designs, including the famous Felsentherme spa and several iconic 1960s buildings, created a unique balance between nature, modernism and functionality. His works stand today as timeless examples of Austrian post-war architecture: bold, refined and forward-looking.
Those wishing to experience art history up close will find plenty to discover in the museums of the Gastein valley. At the Gastein Museum, located in the Grand Hotel de l’Europe, visitors encounter artworks and artefacts from the golden age of the Belle Époque. In Bad Hofgastein, rotating exhibitions showcase both local and international artists, creating a vivid dialogue between history and the present day.
Every summer, Bad Gastein transforms into an open studio. During sommer.frische.kunst., national and international artists take up residence in the valley, filling historic spaces with modern art. Exhibitions, studio visits and performances breathe new life into the grand Belle Époque buildings, where architectural splendour and creative energy inspire one another in perfect harmony.
Even in the colder months, Gastein celebrates creativity. During Art on Snow, Europe’s largest art festival in the snow, the alpine landscape itself becomes a canvas. Artists craft snow sculptures, ice carvings and installations that lend the mountains a fleeting, magical beauty.
