My Gastein experience
The Gastein valley is a place rich in stories. From imperial spa traditions and gold mining to contemporary art, the region’s museums tell of its history, transformation and vibrant culture. Visitors will discover a valley that proudly preserves its heritage while continually finding new ways to interpret it.
Gastein’s museums invite you on fascinating journeys through time. Whether in Bad Gastein or Bad Hofgastein, each venue highlights a different aspect of the valley’s history. Visitors learn how thermal water and mining shaped the region, meet the personalities who left their mark on it and immerse themselves in the world of alpine traditions.
Housed in the historic Grand Hotel de l’Europe, the Gastein Museum showcases valuable exhibits on the region’s spa history, the thermal water boom and the elegant Belle Époque era. Alongside historical documents and photographs, visitors can admire artistic artefacts created by former guests, including aristocrats, artists and researchers.
A place that truly takes you deep into the past: Montanmuseum Altböckstein is dedicated to Gastein’s centuries-old mining tradition. Original tools, mine models and display pieces vividly illustrate how arduous gold mining in the Alps once was.
Located in Dorfgastein, Hofmuseum Hinterschneeberg offers an authentic glimpse into rural life in the valley’s past. The lovingly designed open-air museum is set on a historic farmstead and features original furniture, tools and household items spanning several centuries. Visitors gain insights into craftsmanship, domestic life and everyday routines of bygone eras – from the cosy farmhouse parlour to the old smoke kitchen.
The Gastein museums are perfect destinations when the weather turns grey. But beyond cultural treasures, the region offers plenty more to enjoy while the sun takes a break. The two thermal spas promise soothing relaxation, and the cozy cafés and inns across the three villages serve up culinary delights. Whether you’re drawn to culture, wellness or good food: In Gastein, even a rainy day is an experience for all the senses.
