In the Gastein valley, the year follows a special rhythm – that of tradition. Between the cattle drives, local fairs and Christmas markets, there’s always something to celebrate. Spring

As the first buds begin to bloom, life returns to the valley – along with its springtime traditions. Around Easter, the parishes celebrate the Palmweihe, during which intricately bound palm bouquets are blessed. Easter processions and the traditional blessing of Easter foods are also part of these festive rituals. In May, villagers gather with music, dancing and hearty local food to raise the maypole.

Summer

When the valley shines in vibrant green, Gastein celebrates with joy and togetherness. During the Dorf:Fest, locals and guests come together to enjoy music, dancing and regional delicacies. A particularly atmospheric highlight is the “Berge in Flammen” (“Mountains in Flames”) event, when bonfires light up the surrounding peaks in a warm glow. Throughout the summer, numerous traditional costume and music festivals take place, from open-air brass band concerts to alpine mountain celebrations. Smaller summer events and lovingly curated craft markets also invite visitors to stroll, marvel and join in the festivities.

Autumn

When the valley turns golden and red, it’s time for the Bauernherbst (“Farmers’ Autumn”) harvest season, marked by cattle drives and thanksgiving celebrations. During events like the Nassfeld sheep drive or the Goasabtrieb, the animals return to the valley adorned with flowers and bells. A true highlight is the historic sword dance in Bad Hofgastein – a centuries-old miners’ tradition and part of Austria’s intangible cultural heritage. Thanksgiving and Kirtag fairs are also celebrated in style, bringing together faith, music and village life in a vibrant display of gratitude and togetherness.

Winter

When snow blankets the valley, a sense of quiet magic fills the air. The Christmas markets in Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein are filled with the scent of cinnamon, pastries and hot punch, accompanied by choirs and music groups. During Krampus season, the sound of bells and rattling chains echoes through the streets – a fascinating mix of fear and tradition. After Christmas, the Ofen:Fest in Dorfgastein lights up the winter once again. As the year draws to a close, the New Year’s concert at Kursaal provides a festive finale, ushering Gastein harmoniously into the new year.
