Gastein‘s Heilstollen healing gallery

Deep in the Radhausberg near Böckstein lies a place that is unique in the world: the Gastein Healing Gallery. Where miners once searched for gold, a very special form of therapy is now available.

Deep inside Radhausberg mountain near Böckstein lies a place unlike any other in the world: the Gastein Heilstollen healing gallery. Where miners once searched for gold, a unique form of therapy now unfolds. Warmth, high humidity and a natural radon content create a natural healing climate that can relieve pain, improve mobility and significantly enhance quality of life.

For more than 70 years, people from all over the world have been travelling to Gastein to benefit from the power of the healing gallery. The therapy is medically recognised and approved as an official treatment by health insurance providers.

What makes the healing gallery unique

Inside the gallery, temperatures remain constant between 37 and 41.5 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels reaching up to 100 per cent. In this environment, the body absorbs radon through the skin and respiratory system. The noble gas has a gently stimulating effect on cell metabolism, promoting the production of the body’s own messenger substances, which can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain. This special combination of radon, warmth and humidity forms the basis of so-called radon therapy.

Effective for chronic conditions

Studies and decades of experience confirm the positive effects of the healing gallery therapy for a wide range of medical conditions. It is particularly beneficial for patients with chronic inflammatory diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. The therapy can also bring noticeable relief for respiratory conditions and skin problems.

How a healing gallery treatment works

The therapy consists of eight to ten sessions, each lasting around 60 minutes. Before the first visit to the gallery, patients undergo a medical consultation. Before entering the tunnel for the first time, patients undergo a medical examination. A train takes them around 2.5 km into the mountain, where the climatic conditions at five stations are optimal. In the stillness of the gallery, the body relaxes almost effortlessly. The therapy is complemented by individual medical supervision and additional treatments, such as sessions in Gastein's thermal spas or physiotherapy options.
