The path to the Gastein cure

The first step is to see a specialist, in most cases a rheumatologist or orthopaedist. They should issue the application for a cure, as an application from a specialist increases the chance of approval. So go to the specialist!

An outpatient spa stay is approved every three years or an inpatient spa stay every four years . In the case of medical exceptions , a cure can also be approved more frequently. The application should be medically substantiated .

Scientific information and studies on the effectiveness of the Gastein cure can be sent on request to kur@gastein.com.

Cure application to German insurance providers

An open spa treatment (outpatient preventive treatment) or an inpatient preventive treatment or rehabilitation can be approved. An application for a cure is best issued by a specialist doctor .

Billing agreements exist with Barmer, AOK, KKH, DAK, Techniker Krankenkasse, Hamburg Münchner, Schwäbisch-Gmünd Ersatzkasse, Hanseatische Ersatzkasse, Landwirtschaftliche Krankenkasse, Behörde für Inneres, Bundesknappschaft, BIG, various company health insurance funds, various guild health insurance funds and Deutsche Beihilfe, among others.

Outpatient preventive service (open spa treatment)

  • Cost coverage for therapies, less 10% personal contribution and €10 per doctor's prescription
  • Subsidy for accommodation and meals: between € 0 and € 16 per day
  • Settlement directly with contractual partner. Prerequisite: Confirmation of cost coverage or spa voucher booklet

Organization:

  • Possible every three years (more often in the case of medical exceptions)
  • Free choice of spa resort and accommodation

Inpatient preventive care/rehabilitation

Costs:

  • Full assumption of costs with co-payment by health insurance or pension insurance

Organization:

  • Selection of the spa facility together with the insurance company
  • Appointment allocation by spa facility

Private health insurance

There are no direct billing agreements with private insurance companies , but patients submit the invoice for the treatments prescribed by the spa doctor (with prior notification to the health insurance company) after the end of the cure and should then be reimbursed at least part of the costs.

Deductible from tax

All medically prescribed treatments and co-payments can be deducted as "extraordinary expenses" in your income tax return or employee tax assessment. Accommodation can also be deducted if the accommodation is declared as a spa stay on the invoice. However, the medical necessity of the treatments must have been certified by a medical officer in advance.

Cure application rejected - what now?

An essential part of a cure application is the comprehensive medical justification for a cure by a specialist. The first step in the event of a rejection is therefore to check that the spa treatment application is complete and to have it supplemented by a specialist if necessary.

The specialist can also contact the head physician to clear up any uncertainties. Scientific evidence on the efficacy, effectiveness and cost-benefit ratio of the Gastein cure can be sent on request to kur@gastein.com.
