My Gastein experience
Unlike the intense therapy in the healing gallery, the steam bath’s benefits unfold through warm, moist vapours that rise directly from the depths of the High Tauern mountains. Since 1825, a tunnel system has been directing the warm, radon-rich steam from the Elisabethquelle spring into special steam or cabin baths.
During the approximately 20-minute steam bath, you sit in a special cabin bath, with your head remaining outside. Your body is enveloped in radon-containing vapours, which, together with the warmth and humidity, stimulate cell metabolism and the production of the body’s own messenger substances. They also have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects. Since your head stays outside the cabin during the treatment, you breathe fresh air at room temperature – without any strain on your heart or breathing. This makes the steam bath particularly beneficial for people with circulatory problems and, thanks to the lower thermal load, an ideal alternative to therapy in the healing gallery or in a thermal bath.
Radon therapy in the steam bath has proven particularly effective for chronic inflammatory conditions, from ankylosing spondylitis to fibromyalgia. It can also have positive effects on respiratory conditions and skin problems. After only a few sessions, many patients report noticeable pain relief, improved mobility and an overall increase in well-being.
Like other therapies available during a medical spa stay in Gastein, the radon thermal steam bath requires a medical prescription. A typical medical spa stay combines treatments such as the steam bath, the healing gallery and thermal baths to strengthen both body and mind. For many patients, it is precisely this combination of activity, relaxation and healing water that holds the key to lasting improvement.
The radon steam bath is located in the centre of Bad Gastein, making it easy to combine with the many attractions of the region. Before or after your treatment, enjoy a stroll through the historic spa town, a hike in the fresh mountain air or a visit to the nearby thermal spas – the perfect blend of health and relaxation!
