Angertal, one of four side valleys, has been shaped by its mining history. A number of information stations, recounting legends associate with goldmining, as well as the historic “Miners’ World” in upper Angertal attest to this “golden” era. Our gentle uphill hike through virgin mountain forest gives us time to focus and collect our inner thoughts. From here, we now take a forest path, crossing a forestry lane on multiple occasions, until we come to the Schattbachalm, inviting us to stop for refreshments. Now, the path takes us above the tree line to the Miesbichlscharte at 2,233 m above sea level. From the Miesbichlscharte down to the Bockhartsee and the Bockhartseehütte represents a drop of about 400 vertical meters. You will definitely be ready for a rest break at this point, taking in the marvelous views extending from the Goldberg and Ankogel summits, all the way down to Sportgastein. An old mining path leads down to the valley. Along this path, you will discover glacial sediment and veins of quartz, indicators of the presence of gold. Located not far from here are old miners’ huts, a mine tunnel and generator plant. And with a little bit of luck, you might even find small nuggets as you pan for gold in the Angerbach.
