My Gastein experience
On cleared winter hiking trails , you can walk through snow-covered villages or up to sunny mountain paths where the peaks of the Hohe Tauern seem close enough to touch. You can also experience the most picturesque corners of the snow-covered region on snowshoes.
Whether as a romantic walk for two, together with a guide or as a family excursion: every tour offers moments of relaxation and new perspectives on the alpine winter world. A special bonus: after exercise in the snow, Gastein'swarm thermal baths are a pleasant retreat.
The Gastein Valley offers 19 perfectly groomed winter hiking trails that make the experience of nature accessible to all generations. The paths are cleared, signposted and range from short promenade walks in the valley to sunny high-altitude trails on the Schlossalm or the Stubnerkogel.
Families in particular appreciate this variety. The short walking times, safe routes and numerous rest stops make a winter hike a relaxing excursion for young and old. Particularly practical: with special pedestrian and winter hiking tickets from the cable cars, you can reach the heights in comfort and enjoy panoramic views without having to make long ascents.
If you want to experience the winter landscape away from the slopes, you can also opt for a snowshoe hike . Well-marked routes lead over gentle hills and steep slopes. Whether you prefer a leisurely circular hike or a sporting challenge, snowshoes are a particularly pristine way to experience the winter landscape.
Beginners benefit from special offers, including practical rental equipment, which is available in the local sports stores. Guided snowshoe hikes with experienced guides are particularly recommended for beginners. They know the most beautiful routes and provide valuable tips on safety and technique.
Speaking of safety: if you are out and about in open terrain, you should definitely check the avalanche and weather reports regularly!
Step by step through the glittering splendor: Hikes through the wintry Gastein Valley are a very special experience. Our tips will help you to start your winter adventure well prepared.
Cold, deep snow and more clothing make hiking in winter more strenuous.
It gets dark quicker in winter, so please note: Set off about 1.5 hours after sunrise, return about 1.5 hours before sunset!
Do not leave marked trails! The snowy landscape can harbor dangers, for example loss of orientation, avalanche and fall hazards, startling of resting wild animals and more.
Hot tea in a thermos flask warms the body from the inside.
The Gastein winter hiking pin provides an extra dose of motivation for winter hiking in Salzburger Land. On selected winter hiking trails, you can "clock in" at predetermined checkpoints and collect points. The more tours you complete, the closer you get to the coveted bronze, silver or gold award. This turns every winter or snowshoe hike into an adventure with a rewarding effect.
If you fancy even more exercise in the snow in addition to hiking, you can discover other aspects of winter in the Hohe Tauern by skiing, cross-country skiing, tobogganing or ice skating . The Gastein Valley is also known for its many winter events : Events such as the FIS Snowboard World Cup, Gastein Sounds or the Gastein Classics bring additional variety to your vacation.
After eventful winter days, you can relax in the Gastein thermal spas. In the Alpentherme or Felsentherme, you can immerse yourself in the warm thermal water while the snowflakes dance outside.
